Five years ago, the common wisdom was “Gore-Tex is the gold standard, period.” That’s still true in many cases, but the industry has evolved. Competitors like eVENT and Polartec have narrowed the gap in breathability. Meanwhile, Gore has improved their manufacturing consistency and expanded their product lines (e.g., Gore-Tex Shakedry, Gore-Tex Infinium). The fundamentals haven’t changed, but the execution has transformed.

Here’s my current recommendation: If you’re sourcing for a brand that needs reliable, long-term waterproofing—and the end user won’t be running marathons—Gore-Tex is still the safest bet. But test the complete garment, not just the membrane label.
