  • Choose Gore-Tex (or another quality membrane) if: the user is active, the weather is serious, the garment needs to last multiple seasons, or failure means risk, not just discomfort.
  • Choose cheap coated nylon if: the use is occasional, the user is mostly stationary, the garment is disposable by design, and you can accept a shorter lifespan.
  • Always check: seam tape, zipper quality, lining choice, and whether the fabric's claims are backed by documentation.

And a few random lessons that have saved me money:

  • Don't spray paint nylon fabric to waterproof it. It doesn't work.
  • Don't use lurex thread in load-bearing seams.
  • Don't use mesh like Annie's mesh fabric as a substitute for breathable construction.
  • Do calculate total cost, not unit price.

Bottom line
