Choose Gore-Tex Pro if you're making a technical product with a multi-year life: a serious rain shell, a backcountry ski jacket, technical footwear, or gloves for work or expedition. The upfront premium is real, but the total cost per usable, warranty-backed unit is competitive or better in the mid-volume segment I work in.
Choose a generic membrane if you need a basic waterproof layer at a strict price point, your return rate is manageable, and you have the internal quality team to test every lot. Just don't assume it's cheaper without doing the full cost-of-ownership calculation.
One more confession: I still kick myself for approving a generic membrane for a budget rain shell in 2022. It saved us $1.08 per unit. The first production batch started delaminating at the taped seams after four months. The redo cost us $1,200 in labor and $4,300 in expedited freight.
