Waterproof Fabric, Gore-Tex, and Cleaning: A Scenario-Based Guide

There isn't a single best waterproof fabric. Whether you're choosing a jacket, sourcing material for a production run, or trying to clean a technical garment without ruining it, the right answer depends on which scenario you're in. In my role coordinating rush fabric requests for outdoor brands, I've handled more than 200 emergency orders in the last four years, and the most expensive mistakes happen when someone applies the wrong advice to the wrong situation.

Here are the three scenarios I run into most often:

  • Scenario 2: You already own a waterproof garment and need to care for or repair it.
  • Scenario 3: You are cleaning technical fabric or accessories and wondering if bleach is safe.

Scenario 1: You're choosing or sourcing waterproof fabric

This is where most of the confusion starts. People ask for waterproof nylon fabric, then everything falls apart because waterproof isn't one thing. There is coated nylon, laminated nylon, and different degrees of water resistance based on the hydrostatic head rating. I'm not a textile engineer, so I can't get into polymer chemistry. What I can tell you from a sourcing perspective is that you need to know whether you need a coated fabric or a membrane laminate.

Coated waterproof nylon has a polyurethane coating on the back. It's affordable and works for things like bags, covers, and rain capes. The downside is breathability. If you need a fabric that lets sweat escape, you're better off with a laminate like Gore-Tex. In this case, Gore is the membrane layer, not the nylon itself. You can have a Gore-Tex laminate with a nylon face fabric that feels completely different depending on the denier and finish.

For footwear, I get searches for tenis Gore-Tex. That usually means a tennis shoe or athletic sneaker with a Gore-Tex liner. It's a good choice for city rain and light trail use, but it won't behave like a waterproof boot. A low-cut shoe lets water in over the collar no matter how good the membrane is. That's not a fabric failure; it's a design limitation.

One counterintuitive thing I've learned: the fastest way to get fabric isn't always rush shipping. In March 2024, a client called on a Tuesday afternoon needing 300 yards of waterproof nylon for a demo that had to ship Friday. Normal lead time was ten days. We had a standard 150D nylon laminate in stock, cut and converted it the same day, and it arrived at their shop Thursday morning. They had already budgeted for overnight air on a custom run that the mill couldn't have finished in time.

I've also made my own version of that mistake. A few years back, I skipped re-checking a mill's test data because we'd used that nylon for years. That was the order where the hydrostatic head came back under spec. We caught it before production, but it cost us two days and a $900 re-test.

You also want to keep an eye on outdoor fabric news. As of early 2025, PFAS-free DWR treatments are becoming the default in many technical fabric lines. The membrane might be exactly the same, but the water-repellent finish can be different. If you don't specify the DWR type, you may get a finish that requires more frequent maintenance.

Scenario 2: You own a waterproof garment that needs care or repair

Now let's talk about the most common question I see online: can you bleach microfiber cloths? Short answer, no. Most microfiber cloths are made of a mix of polyester and polyamide. Bleach attacks the polyamide part, wears down the split fibers, and turns an effective cleaning cloth into a less effective rag.

I'm not a chemist, so I can't give you the exact molecular breakdown. What I can tell you from dealing with fabric every day is that bleach is too aggressive for most synthetic technical materials. If you need to sanitize microfiber cloths, use warm water and a mild detergent. You can rinse them thoroughly and let them air dry. Add a second rinse if you're worried about detergent residue.

The same logic applies to towels, gloves, and even some waterproof garments. Bleach seems like a quick answer for mold or stains, but it breaks down elastic, adhesives, and waterproof coatings. By the time you notice the damage, the product's performance is already gone.

In Q4 2024 alone, we fielded eleven separate questions about bleach on technical fabrics. Six of them were about microfiber cleaning cloths. Two were about jackets. The answer was the same in every case: use a gentle technical cleaner, not bleach.

How to tell which scenario you're in

Sometimes people email me with a question that skips the context, and I have to ask four follow-up questions. Here's a shortcut:

  • If you're standing in a store or looking at product specs for something you plan to buy, you're in Scenario 1. Focus on construction, breathability, and intended use.
  • If you already own the item and water is soaking in or the fabric looks damaged, you're in Scenario 2. Start with the care tag, then wash and refresh the DWR before assuming the membrane is broken.
  • If you're holding a bottle of bleach and a stack of microfiber rags, you're in Scenario 3. Put the bleach away and use a mild detergent instead.

When in doubt, test on a hidden seam or corner first. I'd rather spend ten minutes explaining these categories than deal with a mismatched expectation later. An informed customer asks better questions and gets a better result.
